A. Quality Management System
SMK Negeri 4 Yogyakarta is a vocational school that has applied the ISO 9001: 2008 Quality Management System enacting customers’ requirements such as:
1. Customer Focused Organization. Customer satisfaction is the main focus of the organization. However, it does not mean that organization ignores the employees working for the organization.
2. Leadership. How the organization could be controlled depends largely on the leadership of the organization. It means that an effective leadership will bring about an effective organization, or vice versa.
3. Involvement of People. Quality management always involves the human resources the organization owns. Involving the right personnel in making decisions, empowering the personnel in decisions already made, and evaluating the implementation of all the decisions, is an effective variable of an organization.
4. Process Approach. An organization does not only focus on outputs/products, but also pay attention to the process of bringing about the outputs/products.
5. System Approach to Management. There are a number of systemic measures in an organization that will not allow any problem during personnel mutation.
6. Continual Improvement. Sustainable improvements are always made in the organization process.
7. Factual Approach to Decision Making. The right decision is one that is based on a fact not an opinion or assumptions. This underlies the importance of a feasibility study before a decision is made.
8. Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships. An organization shall set out a synergic cooperation with suppliers of customers or raw materials in order to avoid any problem in the production process. For educational context, a vocational school shall make cooperation with its stakeholders: parents, school committee, and other external elements such as companies or entrepreneurs.
B. The Benefits of Applying SMM ISO 9001:2008
1. To have facility in selling products to the European Economic Community. The European people mostly require the ISO standard products. It means the graduates of SMK Negeri 4 Yogyakarta may compete at global level.
2. Organization capability and consistency in maintaining quality. By applying the ISO, an organization shows that it is consistent in maintaining and actualizing the quality of its products, either in the form of goods or services.
3. As a marketing tool. ISO label can be a guarantee for the quality goods and services of an organization. Due to its international guarantee, the products marketing will automatically be easily accomplished.
4. Effective and efficient work. It means that ISO application accredited by the official body may assure that an organization is efficient and effective.
5. Meeting customers demand. This is closely related to the endeavors an organization makes to meet customers’ satisfaction. An institution rendering goods and services for public will definitely want to actualize the customers’ satisfaction. By doing so, they are expected to use its goods and services.
